Energy, brilliance and rhythm: dance is at the heart of this electrifying program, which plunges us into the bustling streets of New York. In Coincident Dances, composer Jessie Montgomery weaves an urban kaleidoscope inspired by New York’s streets, blending jazz, funk and classical music. Gershwin draws inspiration from jazz clubs for his Concerto in F, merging swing and classical elegance with panache under the fingers of Marc-André Hamelin. Escaping the city’s bustle on Long Island, Rachmaninoff writes his Symphonic Dances, a final flourish of Romanticism in exile, imbued with nostalgia and grandeur. Under the direction of Gemma New, the OSM takes us on an imaginary journey through the city that never sleeps—by turns electric, dreamy and endlessly alive.
