In this condensed program, the Orchestra’s individual talents shine as rarely before. Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances open the evening with a sensual exuberance: every section sparkles with virtuosity that is by turns wild and gentle, as though the entire orchestra were becoming an ensemble of soloists. Then comes Scheherazade, in which the voice of Andrew Wan’s violin traces the destiny of the heroine of One Thousand and One Nights. Its supple, spellbinding lines evoke the strategies, doubts, tenderness and boldness of a woman who gradually wins over the sultan and turns her own story into salvation. Two works that showcase the expressive richness of an orchestra in full flight. This concert is also presented in a full-length version.
