Past and present come together in this invitation to explore the imagined worlds and sounds of the East. In Scheherazade, Rimsky-Korsakov unfolds the legend of the storyteller whose strength, subtlety and ingenuity triumph over fear. Andrew Wan’s violin embodies her deep, supple and commanding voice, while conductor Dina Gilbert guides the orchestra like the heroine weaving her own destiny. In a contrasting reflection, French composer Thierry Pécou takes us on a journey “in the manner of Bali” with his Cara Bali Concerto, performed by pianist Alexandre Tharaud, to whom the work is dedicated. Inspired by the cycles, timbres and poetry of gamelan, this concerto becomes a bridge to a vibrant elsewhere, where imagined percussion and piano mingle in a dance of interwoven energies. A sensory journey through legend, rhythm and light. This concert is also presented in a condensed-program version.
