A Hispanic spirit runs through this concert, an incandescent thread connecting nature, myth and a fascination with distant places. Jimmy López’s Symphony No. 4, inspired by the solar eclipse of 2024, translates the primal power of celestial phenomena into music: trembling light, shifting shadows and the dizzying sensation of a world suspended. This spellbinding atmosphere continues in Charlotte Sohy’s Danse mystique, where nature becomes ritual, radiance and enchantment. Against this backdrop emerges an imagined Spain: shimmering in Debussy’s Ibéria, and distinctive and multifaceted in Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole. Neither quite a concerto nor quite a symphony, Lalo’s work blends Germanic nobility, Andalusian accents and violinistic sensuality—an ideal showcase for Kerson Leong, whose tone brings out every contour. A program that sets the imagination ablaze beneath the sun of a mythical Spain.
