Death and Transfiguration elevates the evening with a poignant musical fresco in which the soul, on the threshold of death, finds peace in the light. With Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks, the tone shifts to incisive gestures, bounding rhythms and irresistible orchestral humour. Then comes Don Quixote, whose variations take on a rare expressive intensity through Alisa Weilerstein’s cello playing, superbly supported by Rafael Payare.
