Composed around 1689, Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas is a masterpiece of Baroque musical theatre. The opera tells the story of the doomed love between Dido, Queen of Carthage, and the Trojan prince Aeneas, culminating in the moving final lament, “When I am laid in earth.” Bernard Labadie conducts La Chapelle de Québec and Les Violons du Roy, with Ema Nikolovska as Dido, Tyler Duncan as Aeneas and Magali Simard-Galdès as Belinda. Three excerpts from The Indian Queen form a prologue that places the action in a mythological world. Duration: 1 hour 40 minutes, without intermission.
