Miles Smiles - Wayne Shines

Marking the 100th anniversary of Miles Davis’s birth and paying lasting tribute to Wayne Shorter, Miles Smiles – Wayne Shines returns to the stage. From 1965 to 1968, the Second Great Quintet—with Hancock, Carter and Williams—produced some of the century’s most daring music. Composer Jean-Nicolas Trottier has extended that legacy: drawing on Shorter’s melodic fragments and rhythmic motifs, he has created full-fledged jazz symphonies—not arrangements, but original works in dialogue with their source. Premiered in 2019 at L’Astral and released as a live album in 2023—named the year’s best large-ensemble album by the Ottawa Citizen—the program now returns, revealing a musical architecture only hinted at in the original recordings.
