Fauré’s Requiem rises like a breath of calm in the history of music: far from terrifying visions of death, the composer offers a gentle, luminous, almost fraternal journey. His understated temperament, restrained sensitivity and search for clarity resonate on every page, from the contemplation of the Introit to the suspended tenderness of the Pie Jesu. This is a work that consoles rather than dramatizes, seemingly opening a door onto a peaceful beyond. Opening this deeply human programme, the meeting of two major Quebec voices—composer Keiko Devaux and writer Dany Laferrière—promises a new work in which poetry and music respond to one another with intensity. The programme features the premiere of La vingt-cinquième heure by Keiko Devaux and Dany Laferrière; Margaret Bonds’s Credo; and Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem in its version with organ.
