From its very first images, Fritz Lang’s Metropolis draws us into a striking futuristic epic, where humanity struggles not to be crushed by progress. To mark its centenary, this landmark of silent cinema returns in its restored extended version, accompanied by a live orchestra. Beneath the city, workers move in rhythm, engulfed by gigantic machines. Above them, in the upper city, a carefree elite surveys its empire. Tension, oppression and revolt divide the two worlds. Under the direction of Frank Strobel, the OSM performs Gottfried Huppertz’s powerful score live, revealing the enduring modernity of a masterpiece that profoundly shaped the aesthetics of science-fiction cinema.
