Schubert and Farrenc: Exploring the Origins of the Quintet Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet is one of his most popular and captivating works. Its title comes from a song that provides the basis for a set of charming variations. The double bass gives it a rich, deep sound that contrasts with the piano’s crystalline flourishes. Twenty years later, French pianist and composer Louise Farrenc followed in Schubert’s footsteps, adopting an equally lyrical and refined style in her piano quintets. Program: • Louise Farrenc: Piano Quintet No. 2 in E major, Op. 31 (28 minutes) • Franz Schubert: Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667, “Trout” (38 minutes) Musicians of the Orchestre Métropolitain: Yukari Cousineau, violin; Elvira Misbakhova, viola; Amos Friesen, cello; René Gosselin, double bass; Jennifer Bourdages, piano. This concert is supported by the Conseil québécois de la musique.
